Thinking or Planning on building a
new home? Demand ENERGY STAR!Wisconsin ENERGY
STAR Homes and the federal ENERGY STAR programs are designed to let
homeowners and builders know that they are getting and building a high
performing home. These programs require having a third party consultant
(SCES) to be involved in the planning and construction of the home and
diagnostic testing performed on the home. This will help determine that
the home is operating properly and efficiently.
The Process:
-
Give a set of plans to SCES and we will input the
home into our software simulation program called REM/Rate. This
program allows us to see how the home will measure up to the US
average energy usage home for the area it is located. We will be
able to help foresee possible design and material issues that could
hinder the performance of the home.
-
Pre-insulation inspection - A SCES Consultant will
meet the builder on-site right before insulation is going be
installed to discuss possible issues or concerns with building
envelope that regards the homes' performance.
-
Insulation inspection - A SCES Consultant will meet
the builder again on-site after insulation and air sealing is
completed to find any possible issues or concerns and discuss ideas
to correct them.
-
Final inspection & diagnostic testing - After the
home is substantially complete and all building components are
functioning, a SCES Consultant will do a final walkthrough of the
home. The Consultant will also test the homes air infiltration rate,
ventilation system, and scan the home for good thermal coverage
using a blower door, balometer, and infrared camera.
-
The builder and/or homeowner of the home will
receive certification that the home is ENERGY STAR compliant.
